The course is designed for both primary and secondary teachers Australia-wide who want to increase their knowledge of grammar and their ability to support students’ literacy. The course has been been particularly tailored to help you understand the key components of English grammar as documented in the Australian Curriculum and the NSW Syllabus.

This self-paced, online course is organised into a series of mini lessons to help teachers learn grammar step-by-step. The course includes many interactive activities to give teachers lots of chances to practice and refine their new knowledge.

Grammar Basics Workshop will cover the following:

⊛ Parts of speech/word classes – nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.
⊛ Verb systems – main/auxiliary, finite/non-finite, transitive/intransitive
⊛ Word groups/phrases
⊛ Clauses
⊛ Sentences – simple, compound, complex
⊛ Grammatical function – subject, object, complement, adverbial etc.
⊛ Active and passive sentences
⊛ Teaching strategies and activities

Grammar Basics Workshop helps teachers to:

⊛ understand the fundamentals of English grammar as outlined in the documented in the Australian Curriculum and the NSW Syllabus
⊛ develop confidence in using grammatical terminology
⊛ analyse the grammar of texts, identify errors and apply this knowledge to their teaching

⊛ gain classroom-ready grammar teaching strategies, skills and resources

About the instructor:
The facilitator of Grammar Basics Workshop, Margaret McBride (BA, M.Ed), has over 30 years of English language teaching experience. Margaret has also taught teacher education and grammar at Australian universities.

Grammar in Context: Using Grammar to Improve Students’ Writing Outcomes

This course is designed for both primary/elementary and secondary/high school teachers who want to increase their knowledge of the ‘grammar in context’ approach to grammar teaching. The course is divided into six modules that aim to:

⊛ Provide teachers with an overview of the ‘grammar in context’ approach.
⊛ Sensitise teachers to the language features of real texts and genres.
⊛ Help teachers understand the purpose of genre-based language features and authorial choices.
⊛ Develop teachers understanding of grammar and meaning. ⊛ Equip teachers to teach students how their grammatical choices help them to communicate effectively and creatively in different genres and contexts.
⊛ Model to teachers how they can help students recognise the grammar/language choices of authors and apply this knowledge effectively and creatively in their own writing.


About the instructor:
The facilitator of this course is Dr Navid Sabet (BA, PhD), who has a research and teaching background in education, grammar and literacy studies.
